Kamarina

One of the most important archeological sites in Sicily is Kamarina. This latter was an important colony of Syracuse, it was founded at the mouth of the river Ippari at the beginning of the VI century B.C. with the aim of creating a garrison along the African route and stopping the expansion of Gela towards the south. After several occupations, Kamarina was finally destroyed in 827 by the Arab army during their conquest of Sicily.

The current remains are of a great archaeological interest; they testify the vastness of the site. There are archaic tombs and little significant ruins of a temple dedicated to Minerva; along the Ippari you can recognize the ancient canal port. The city is still recognizable in its original area thanks to the remains of the houses and the floors. The archaeological museum boasts a big collection of archaeological remains that date back from prehistory to the ancient Greek period.
