Modica has Neolithic origins and it is the historical capital of the territory. It was in fact the capital of the County until the 19th century; it had an important political, economic and cultural influence becoming one the most powerful fiefs of the south.\u00a0

Its old town, rebuilt after the devastating earthquake of 1693, is one of the most significant examples of the late Baroque architecture. The city was included in 2002 in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites for its historical architectonical masterpieces.
M\u00f2dica, whose name has origin from the Phoenician M\u00f9tika (hotel, dwelling), is developped on an extensive highland crossed by deep canyons (locally called \"quarries\").

Here the urban structure recalls the medieval layout of the historic center, in fact there are houses, alleys and long stairs developed on the spur of the hill of Pizzo.
In the old part of the city, the houses lean against each other and they are often the extension of the ancient caves inhabited since prehistory.\u2028<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

  • \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/i>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSan Giorgio\u2019s Cathedral: <\/strong>it is the symbol of the Sicilian Baroque and it is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.\u2028<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
  • \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/i>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSan Pietro\u2019s Cathedral:<\/strong> it was declared Mother Church like Saint George, and it is the \"official\" church of the Counts. It is also part of UNESCO.\u2028<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
  • \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/i>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSan Giovanni Evangelista Church: <\/strong>it is characterized by a late baroque style facade with a majestic staircase at the entrance.\u2028<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
  • \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/i>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSanta Maria del Carmelo Church: <\/strong>it preserves some elements that go back to before the earthquake of 1693, including a portal. It is one of the very few monuments that resisted the terrible earthquake.\u2028<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
  • \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/i>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tPolara Palace: <\/strong>it is a late Baroque building; the coat of arms of the family \u2013 the North Star - was erected on the pediment.\u00a0<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
  • \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/i>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGrimaldi Palace: <\/strong>inside there is the portal of St. Cristoforo Church, private chapel of the Grimaldi family; it is the most beautiful example of neo-Renaissance style building.\u2028<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
  • \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/i>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCounts of Modica Castle:<\/strong> it rises on a rocky promontory hardly attackable; for many centuries it represented the seat of the political and administrative power of the County of Modica.\u2028 <\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
  • \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/i>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tTorre dell\u2019Orologio:<\/strong> it is a medieval watch tower of the castle of the Counts, it has been affixed a mechanical clock on it. From the tower you can enjoy a picturesque stunning view of Scicli. The clock tower is \"World Heritage\" and it is the most photographed monument in the city.<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
  • \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/i>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSalvatore Quasimodo birthplace:<\/strong> a poet who received the Nobel Prize for Literature.\u2028<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
  • \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/i>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCivic Archaeological Museum: <\/strong>it is a former Benedictine monastery; here you can not miss the collection of paintings belonged to Salvatore Quasimodo, along with the bronze statue of Hercules of Cafeo, dating back to the third century BC.<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
